We’ll stop at a charming farm stall showcasing the region’s local produce. Our adventure continues to Cape Agulhas, the dramatic southernmost tip of the African continent, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans converge. This largely untouched area, with its rugged coastline, holds tales of numerous shipwrecks. The historic Cape Agulhas Lighthouse stands as an iconic beacon marking this significant geographical point. Afterward, we proceed via the historic town of Swellendam and the scenic Tradouw Pass to Barrydale and the legendary Route 62. Our final destination for the day is Oudtshoorn, globally recognized as the “ostrich feather capital” and the heart of the world’s ostrich farming industry. Today, we travel to Plettenberg Bay, often called the “jewel of the Garden Route,” for a visit to the remarkable Birds of Eden sanctuary, the world’s largest single free-flight aviary. This sanctuary provides a safe environment for a diverse collection of African birds. Our journey continues to the impressive Bloukrans Bridge, home to the world’s highest commercially operated Bungy Jump. We then explore the Tsitsikamma National Park and the iconic Storms River Mouth (weather permitting). This stunning park boasts 80 km of dramatic rocky coastline, spectacular seascapes, a remote mountainous region with secluded valleys covered in Fynbos, and temperate high forests with deep river gorges leading to the ocean.

After breakfast, we head eastwards through the lush Tsitsikamma Forest towards Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), affectionately known as the “friendly city.” We’ll proceed to Chief Dawid Stuurman Airport for your onward flight to Johannesburg (JNB), where you’ll be met upon arrival and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to relax and unwind (unescorted).

Today is dedicated to exploring the significant historical sites of Soweto and its surroundings, where pivotal events in the struggle against apartheid unfolded. Our tour begins with a drive past the iconic FNB Stadium, also known as Soccer City, the venue for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final and the site of Nelson Mandela’s first speech in Johannesburg after his release. We continue through Diepkloof, home to some of Soweto’s wealthiest residents, and then to Kliptown, the historic location where the Freedom Charter was adopted in 1955. We’ll drive past the Regina Mundi Church, which played a crucial role in the township’s history of resistance. Next, we’ll visit Vilakazi Street, the world-renowned street that was once home to two Nobel Peace Prize laureates: Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. The afternoon concludes with poignant visits to the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum, commemorating the role of students in the anti-apartheid struggle, and the powerful Apartheid Museum, offering a comprehensive understanding of this significant era in South African history. After a brief freshening up at your lodge, we’ll enter the world-famous Kruger National Park for an exciting afternoon of game viewing from the comfort of your closed touring vehicle. Kruger offers unparalleled wildlife viewing opportunities, and you’ll quickly understand the importance of conservation efforts in this unique reserve. Following an action-packed afternoon, savor authentic regional cuisine at your hotel.

Your day begins with an early morning wake-up call and a pre-packed breakfast before embarking on a thrilling open vehicle game drive (accompanied by an experienced English-speaking game ranger) through the Kruger National Park. Your guide will strive to provide unforgettable sightings of the legendary “Big Five,” as well as a diverse array of general game and prolific birdlife. You’ll have an optional opportunity (at your own cost and subject to availability) to learn about the vital work of the Kruger Park Anti-Poaching Dog Unit, a specialized team that trains dogs to track poachers and detect illegal wildlife products. Return to the lodge for lunch (own account) and a relaxing siesta.
